Meet Our Team

SQN Venture Partners was founded by an elite team of professionals who have decades of combined expertise working with startup companies as founders, advisors, and board members.

Ryan McCalley

Managing Partner & Founder

Ryan McCalley is the Managing Partner and Founder of SQN Venture Partners. He has lead responsibilities for the day-to-day operations of SQN Venture Partners, the sourcing and investment process, and portfolio construction. Ryan brings over 15 years of portfolio management and startup operational experience to SQN.

Prior to establishing SQN Venture Partners in partnership with SQN, he was the Senior Vice President of ATEL Ventures, a San Francisco private equity firm that manages $2 billion in assets, providing venture debt financing to emerging-technology companies. His tenure with ATEL began in 2004, and he held various positions responsible for portfolio management, underwriting, and origination, including serving as the head of the Clean Energy Investments.

His extensive experience financing emerging technology companies led him to take a sabbatical from ATEL, during which he successfully cofounded and launched PURE Energies, Inc. in 2010. PURE became a leading acquisition platform for residential solar energy, pioneering online and telephone sales. He was part of the founding senior management team and board that led PURE from concept to raising over $20 million of venture capital financing, led by New Enterprise Associates, the nation’s largest venture capital firm. During 2014, PURE Energies became a top 5 residential solar provider, which ultimately led to an all-cash acquisition by NRG Energy Inc., a Fortune 250 company.

Mr. McCalley possesses a broad skill set and experience in finance, portfolio management, and company advisement. He is an advisor and board member to M&L Commodities, Inc., an industrial and commercial real estate development partnership, as well as mentor and advisor to numerous startup companies.
